If you’ve shopped for an EV recently and seen terms like “NACS,” “CCS,” or “J3400” and had no idea what they meant, you’re not alone — the industry is in the middle of a genuine transition, and even people who follow this closely don’t always agree on the timeline. Here’s what’s actually settled, and what’s still in motion.

The Short Version

There are two main fast-charging connector types in North America right now:

CCS

The connector most non-Tesla EVs have used for DC fast charging over the past decade.

NACS

Originally Tesla’s proprietary connector, now opened up as an industry standard that other automakers can build into their own vehicles.

The industry is moving toward NACS as the future standard, but CCS isn’t disappearing overnight, and the transition is playing out at different speeds depending on the automaker.

How We Got Here

Tesla’s charging connector was proprietary for years — only Tesla vehicles could use it, and only at Tesla’s own Supercharger stations. That changed in November 2022, when Tesla opened up the specification and renamed it NACS, positioning it as a standard any manufacturer could adopt.

The shift happened fast after that. In May 2023, Ford became the first major automaker to announce it would adopt NACS, with new EVs featuring native NACS ports starting with the 2025 model year, and existing Ford EVs gaining adapter-based access to Superchargers before that. Nearly every other major automaker announced similar plans within the following months. In June 2023, SAE International — the organization that standardizes automotive engineering specs — formally ratified the Tesla connector as the J3400 standard, which is the official technical name for what most people just call NACS. That standard was further finalized in September 2024, making it possible for other manufacturers and suppliers to build NACS-compatible hardware without needing Tesla’s direct involvement.

Where Things Actually Stand in 2026

Despite the wave of announcements back in 2023, the physical transition takes longer than press releases suggest. As of the 2026 model year, most new non-Tesla EVs are still shipping with CCS ports, even as automakers work toward NACS. Federally funded NEVI charging stations are required to include CCS connectors, and most major charging networks are building dual-cable stations that offer both CCS and NACS connectors side by side, rather than replacing one with the other outright.

Some manufacturers are further along than others. Stellantis, for example, announced that select battery-electric models — including the Jeep Wagoneer S, Dodge Charger Daytona, and 2026 Jeep Recon — would gain native NACS compatibility and Supercharger network access starting in early 2026 in North America, though the automaker itself has acknowledged this rollout began later than originally planned.

What This Means If You Already Own an EV

If your EV has a CCS port, it is not becoming obsolete. CCS charging infrastructure isn’t going away — there are still tens of thousands of CCS fast-charging ports across the U.S. and Canada, and new public stations continue to be built with CCS connectors alongside NACS ones.

Most automakers that have committed to NACS also offer or sell adapters that let existing CCS vehicles plug into NACS stations, including many Tesla Superchargers. Ford was the first to offer such an adapter to customers, enabling access to the majority of Tesla’s newer Supercharger hardware. That said, adapter availability and compatibility vary by automaker and even by specific Supercharger site, so it’s worth checking your vehicle manufacturer’s current guidance rather than assuming universal compatibility.

What This Means If You’re Shopping for a New EV

  • A CCS-equipped EV is not a bad choice. It remains well supported by current infrastructure, and new dual-connector stations continue to expand that support.
  • A NACS-equipped EV (native, not adapter-based) gives you more direct access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, which has generally been rated as one of the most reliable and extensive fast-charging networks in the country.

If you’re choosing a vehicle based on charging network access, the most reliable step is to check the automaker’s current official statement and, if possible, confirm with a current owner or dealer.

The Bottom Line

The direction of the industry is clear: NACS is becoming the default connector for new EVs and new charging infrastructure in North America. What’s less certain is exactly how fast each automaker gets there, and how smooth the adapter experience will be in the meantime. For most drivers, the practical answer is the same either way — check what your specific vehicle supports today, keep an eye on your automaker’s official NACS timeline, and don’t assume last year’s charging network map is still accurate.
